Abdominal wall health

A diastasis recti describes an excessively large gap between the abdominal muscles, exceeding the normal size. This gap forms when the connective tissue, known as the linea alba, between the abdominal muscles is stretched. Diastasis recti often occurs in people after pregnancy , during sports involving high pressure , or through heavy physical labor .

The upper body of a white person, perceived as female, wearing only leggings and a bra, so that the stomach is visible, the stomach shows clear signs of pregnancy and a clearly visible diastasis recti.
Illustration of a person perceived as female with the rectus abdominis (straight abdominal muscles) anatomically drawn on their abdomen, showing a clear diastasis recti.

Diastasis recti

Abdominal wall dysfunction

While diastasis recti causes no symptoms in some people, in others it can cause a wide range of symptoms , including:

  • Instability in the core

  • Digestive problems or bloating

  • Weight problems

  • Abdominal pain

  • Umbilical or inguinal hernias

  • Herniated discs

  • Back pain

  • as well as discomfort due to visible changes in the abdominal area.

If the abdomen feels unstable or is very distended, it could be due to a so-called abdominal wall dysfunction . This doesn't involve a visible gap (as in diastasis recti), but rather something deeper:
The interaction between the various structures of your core – namely abdominal muscles, pelvic floor, diaphragm, and deep back muscles – is disrupted. This affects the function of the trunk muscles, regardless of whether a gap exists.

This could mean:

  • Your stomach gives way too much when you cough or carry things.

  • You can't easily "control" it or keep it active.

  • You feel a sense of weakness, instability, or pressure.

  • The midsection feels "empty" or "pulled apart," even without a visible gap.

Training bei Rektusdiastase & Bauchwanddysfunktion

Individual training for diastasis recti and abdominal wall dysfunction

Today there are various evidence-based methods to specifically treat diastasis recti or to sustainably treat abdominal wall dysfunction .

I work with, among other things, the following approaches:

  • Core stability exercises

  • Everyday training – for a conscious approach to posture, movement and stress

  • Breathing exercises – for better control of the deep abdominal muscles and the pelvic floor

  • Progressive plank intervention

  • Fascia training

  • Tupler Technique ®

We'll work together to find the method that suits you best – I often combine different strategies individually, depending on your body and your goals. Core stability can even be addressed during pregnancy. Feel free to get in touch and we can explore the best approach for you.
