Our pelvic floor is a network of muscles, fascia and ligaments that gives our body support, strength and upright posture. It is responsible for holding the bladder, uterus and bowel in place and for maintaining our continence. Strains such as pregnancy, childbirth or intense sport can weaken the pelvic floor and impair its functions.
When the pelvic floor no longer performs its tasks properly, this can lead to various problems. The most common symptoms of pelvic floor weakness include:
-
Incontinence (urine leakage or uncontrolled urination)
-
Prolapse of the uterus, bowel or bladder
-
Back pain or herniated disc
-
Pain during sexual intercourse or during menstruation
-
Postural problems and pain in the skeletal system
-
A feeling of pressure and pain in the vaginal area
